To this end, we provide complimentary resources, advocacy campaigns, and local personal support to build scalable financial wellness initiatives throughout Virginia.

Strengthening Virginia with Sustainable Economic Empowerment Programming

The mission of the Virginia Financial Educators Council℠ is to build sustainable, scalable economic empowerment programs that have a real impact on people’s lives at the community level. To accomplishing this mission, we focus on these 3 Pillars:

Pillar 1: Increase Access & Develop Sustainable Financial Education Programming.

Organizations – We provide resources, training, personnel, and support to build scalable financial wellness programming.

Individuals & Families – Resources and courses are provided for those seeking to improve their own finances and/or teach their kids about money.

Pillar 2: Raise Awareness for Economic Empowerment through Financial Education.

Advocacy Promotion Campaigns – We promote the adoption of financial literacy into schools, getting families involved in teaching kids about money, and encouraging individuals to improve their knowledge.

Local Financial Education Data – Conducting and curating Virginia-specific personal finance research to share with stakeholders across the education and media sectors.

Pillar 3: Develop Relationships to Deploy and Sustain Community Financial Wellness.

Combat Financial Illiteracy – This is a crucial moment for our country and its citizens. And financial literacy is the key to addressing one of this country’s top crises.

Virginia Financial Literacy

The Virginia Financial Educators Council℠ demonstrates its commitment to promoting Virginia financial literacy by spearheading an effort to provide organizations and people with access to personal finance resources and information. One piece of a nationwide initiative, this push to improve Virginia financial literacy builds financial capability among individuals and groups. All across the Old Dominion State, increases in Virginia financial literacy are making headway toward bolstering the state economy.

Virginia Financial Literacy Legislation & Educational Stats

Reported by a program of the U.S. DOE’s National Center for Education Statistics, the Common Core of Data (CCD), research shows that Virginia’s dense population can claim a higher number of total schools, teachers, and students than the U.S. averages. The Old Dominion State has 2,162 schools (1,972 average); 89,967 teachers (61,418 average); and nearly 1.3 million students (986,521 average) as of the 2014-15 academic year.

In 2015 Virginia enacted SB 846, amending the Virginia State Code related to the Department of Social Services to develop and implement a plan under which citizens receiving public assistance are provided with information about free financial literacy courses (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2015).

About the Virginia Financial Educators Council℠

The Virginia Financial Educators Council℠ – an organization begun in 2017 – partners with the National Financial Educators Council® (NFEC®) in a campaign to strive toward shared goals for promoting financial literacy. Those goals are accomplished through a push to build successful community-level initiatives.
